THE TRANSOCHILATOR

Stage 1 - Lairhill to Greenforet Hill

There are several approaches to the start by road: From Greenloaning, Bridge of Allan and Dunblane. It is probably easiest to take the Glen Road from the India Gate roundabout in Dunblane, up the hill and turn left to the Sheriffmuir Inn.

The nearest railway station is at Dunblane which is about 5km from the Sheriffmuir Inn.

At the time of writing, it is not possible to ask for permission to park at the inn. The last time I looked the inn was closed and for sale, so parking in the inn carpark would be at your own risk. There are parking options nearby but the general situation is difficult, especially at the weekend. The road is narrow and passing places must be kept clear of obstructions, so it is better to be dropped off if at all possible. Presumably you will be collected from the other end so maybe a drop will be possible too…

Starting from the Inn, walk along the road heading north east to Lairhill, marked by the stand of trees on the right of the road [ ///loosed.pepper.pupils ]. This is also known as Camp Runamuck and is marked by a gate with vehicle access blocked and signs of camping. Walk through the camp heading south east, following the path, which leaves the wooded area, cuts the corner and follows the field boundary [ ///trickle.bedspread.marzipan ].

Keep on this path along the field margin until you come to a gate, a bank and the burn crossing [ ///triathlon.pounce.swim ]. It can be a bit slippery in wet weather and there are boggy bits near the bottom of this dip but this is the easiest place to cross the burn and is very manageable if care is taken.

Climb the bank on the other side, keeping to the path, which may seem less distinct as it gets drier under foot. It is a simple route up to the top of Glentye Hill and it is easier to follow the path than wade through the white grass. If you have the OS NN80/90 map, the path line is where the contour numbers are gathered. [ ///ended.blaze.sensitive ]

At the summit of Glentye Hill keep going east, still on the path, down to the small col joining Glentye Hill to Mickle Corum. Keep following the path east, up Mickle Corum. It drifts to the right of the summit, so you need to work your way left to get to the very top; the main path will take you to the fence right of the summit. Get over the gate and turn right (south east) and follow the fence from the top of Mickle Corum to the top of Greenforet Hill.
